The boat I will use for this challenge is called 'Pacific Pete'. It has had an excellent record and 4 people have so far crossed in her. She was built in 1996 and first competed in the 1997 race. However, back then she was a double and was called 'Toc H Phoenix'. Mark Stubbs & Steve Issacs rowed her across the Atlantic and came 6th in the Atlantic Crossing PSC Race. In 2002 she was officially renamed and in 2003, Martin Wood rowed her the East-West route solo and then in 2004 Samson Knight rowed her East-West solo and came 1st in the ORSARR 2004 race.

The boat is made from 22 laser cut marine plywood pieces. This method of construction has allowed others to make their own boats in the past. The double chine construction together with the specially developed laser-cut self-jigging kit allows the builder to achieve the correct shape accurately with the minimum of specialised skills and equipment. Materials have been chosen for their suitability and durability.

The location of the small aft hatch allows access to the rudder and for the deployment of drogues or sea anchors as well as allowing some through ventilation in the tropical heat.

The design is exclusively sub-divided into watertight compartments and the disposition of the aft cabin for accommodation and forward stowage together with the raised double bottom ensures that the boat is fully self righting and will be largely self draining.

The boat is 7.1m long, 1.9m wide and has a fully laden weight of 750kg
