I have decided to take this opportunity to raise funds for 2 charities.

Prostate cancer has been a neglected health issue for years. 27,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. 10,000 men in the UK die of prostate cancer every year – THAT’S ONE AN HOUR! A man in the UK has a 1 in 11 chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

It was against this background that The Prostate Cancer Charity was set up in 1996 and it has played a key role in raising awareness of the disease and instigating political debate about the services and support. The charity offers both research and the support and information services.

The reason I have decided to support this charity is that members of my family and friends have had prostate cancer scares in the past.

The Breast Cancer Campaign was started in 1988 with the aim of researching a cure for breast cancer. Women are more likely to develop breast cancer than men. Every year in Britain 40,470 new cases are diagnosed in women and 240 in men. The charity has awarded a total of 84 grants with a total value of over £6.8 million to various research institutes across the UK over the past 9 years. The reason I have decided to support this charity is that a year ago I personally had a scare, and some of my friends have also had scares in the past. I will accept sponsorship for both or either of these charities. Unless otherwise specified I will divide all support equally between these two charities after the minimum amount of money is raised to pay for the boat and equipment etc.
