The challenge starts in November 2005. I will set off from San Sebastian, La Gomera in the Canary Islands and row single handed all the way to Antigua in the West Indies. It's a distance of over 3000 miles. Previous unassisted solo rowing attempts have taken anything from 42 to 110 days to complete this distance.

I am aiming to beat the previous record held by Emmanuel Coindre of France of 42 days 14 hours and 31 minutes. Only 26 other solo rowers have ever completed the E-W Atlantic Route. I intend to be the 29th and the quickest! This will require tremendous dedication and hard work. I am fully committed to this project and am really looking forward to the challenges it represents.

However, the physical part of this challenge is only half the story. In my weeks at sea I will face tremendous mental hardships. Training myself mentally for this challenge is something that I anticipate to be far harder than the physical challenge. I am starting dedicated training in September 2004 when I formally open my account.

I have secured assistance from Olympic Gold medal-winning oarsman Martin Cross. He will be helping me prepare both mentally and physically for this awesome adventure.

Martin has an excellent record of exceeding expectations and runs his own life coaching company. He won his Olympic Gold in 1984 with Steve Redgrave in the coxed fours event. Since then he has become a rowing guru in terms of coaching and as a media reporter.
